Indonesia's manufacturing activity quickens in January
15 Feb 2023
Indonesia's Manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index continued to rise in January, thanks to higher levels of both output and new orders.
The S&P Indonesia Manufacturing PMI rose to 51.3 in January from 50.9 in December 2022. Readings above 50 indicate an expansion, while below 50 signals contraction.
Production expanded during the months amid higher demand for Indonesian manufactured goods. The new export orders, however, declined for an eighth straight month to a marked degree. Cost pressures persisted, the report said.

Shanghai economy shrinks for the first time ever
02 Feb 2023
Shanghai's economy contracted 0.2% in real terms for 2022, marking the city's first negative growth since tracking began in 1978.
The downturn from 2021's 8.1% growth resulted largely from Shanghai's two-month lockdown last spring under China's strict zero-COVID policy. The move forced factories to suspend production and disrupted supply chains.
Shanghai residents were required to stay home during this period, which squeezed consumer spending. Total retail sales in the city, including through online channels, dropped 9.1% last year.
Shanghai's tourism sector continued to suffer even after the lockdown ended in late May, due to restrictions on indoor dining and on long-distance travel within China. The city's hotels and restaurants saw a 22.4% drop in revenue. Online sales fell 3.9%.

Indonesia’s trade surplus hits record high in 2022

Indonesia’s trade surplus hit a record high of USD 54.46 billion last year amid a global increase in commodity prices and a disruption to the global supply chains as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The surplus was a 53.75 per cent increase from the USD 35.42 billion in 2021. It was caused by increases in prices and export shipments of commodities like coal, crude palm oil and iron.
